PFLAG // About PFLAG

“PFLAG is the extended family of the LGBTQ community. We’re made up of LGBTQ individuals, family members, and allies. Because together, we’re stronger.”

Founded in 1972 by Jeanne Manford in New York City, PFLAG (formerly known as “Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays”) has grown into a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 400 affiliate chapters in the United States and elsewhere. This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced, and serviced by the PFLAG National Office in Washington, D.C., the national Board of Directors, and Regional Directors.

Locally, the PFLAG Nashville chapter was founded in the 1980s by Ms. Gene Floyd and other concerned parents. Our chapter has maintained a presence in Nashville every year since our founding without fail. The PFLAG Nashville chapter is supported and managed on a volunteer basis. There are no paid staff members. Our leadership team consists of our Officers of the Board, currently consisting of two Co-Chairs and a Secretary.  These positions are supported by our Board of Directors, at-large members. We are proud of the fact that our leadership team consists of several people of all ages and backgrounds made up of gay and straight people, trans and cisgender people, young professionals, and moms and dads of LGBTQ children. We have discovered that this diversity lends itself to a greater understanding of the challenges that people are facing who seek our group for support.

PFLAG provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. We are committed to helping others learn what we have learned, to help change attitudes, and to create an environment of understanding so that all LGBTQ people can live with dignity and respect.

PFLAG is not affiliated with any ethnic, religious, economic, or political group. Our purpose is to confidentially help people understand sexual orientation and gender identity/expression while helping to raise awareness and acceptance in the community. PFLAG offers support no matter where you are on your journey.
