As an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church and the parent of a lesbian daughter, I have found the PFLAG organization extremely helpful in their support, educational information and processes and the acceptance with other parents who have gay/lesbian children. Currently I am proudly serving on the Leadership Team for PFLAG and completely support their work and purpose. James E. Strickland
PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) is a national organization created to offer support, provide learning opportunities and an open, free and safe environment for families and friends of lesbians and gays within our communities. The Nashville Chapter meets the third Tuesday of each month, from 7:00- 8:30 p.m. at the Scarritt-Bennett Center, 1008 19th Avenue, South.
PFLAG is committed to helping parents and friends learn that they are not alone when a son or daughter comes to you sharing that they are gay or lesbian. PFLAG changes attitudes and creates an environment of understanding and mutual support. Monthly meetings bring parents and friends together to share concerns, problems and successes. Often there are guest speakers. The main focus is always one of support. Diversity is always evident as mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, extended family members and grandparents gather each month.
If you have parents within your congregation who have a gay son or lesbian daughter and would benefit from this organization, please share this information with them. They will be welcomed!
